PATHOLOGY SERVICES
Your doctor may request a blood test. The blood collector will take no more blood than we think will be necessary to complete all the procedures that have been requested. However, in many cases a small amount of blood is left over when we have completed our tests. This surplus blood is vital material for laboratories. We use it for teaching purposes, to check the quality of our laboratory systems, to improve our laboratory tests and to determine the normal levels of blood constituents. Work outside these defined areas is strictly regulated as research by the Shropshire Research Ethics Committee. If we propose to undertake research work on your blood sample, we will tell you about it and ask for your specific consent before taking the sample. We very much hope that you will have no objection to use of surplus material as set out above, and we will assume this is the case for all samples received in the normal manner. However, if you do have any objection to the use of surplus material, please ask the blood collector to record your objection on the request form, and we will ensure that your wishes are respected. Thank you very much for your help.
